Edward Valentine served as the Representative from Nebraska from 1879 to 1885 and as the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms from 1890 to 1893. He obtained the signatures of several legislators and other Washington dignitaries. The ownership of the album prior to Valentine is unknown. Valentine family members collected autographs after his death for the album. Collection consists of a Congressional autograph album with a few loose items. The album holds the signatures of legislators, U. S. presidents, foreign ministers, writers, priests, and many others. A few of the names are Cornelius Vanderbilt, Daniel Webster, Franklin Pierce, Jefferson Davis, James Garfield, Abraham Lincoln, Richard Nixon, and Mary Walker.
